Recently the new Planet of the Apes film got a longer title (Rise of the Planet of the Apes), and moved itself to August. The film still stars James Franco, Andy Serkis and Freida Pinto, and is still directed by Rupert Wyatt. But no footage has been made available, and the sole image has been one of Franco looking at a computer. With summer looming, we should be getting a trailer right? Well, it looks like this week will feature a number of Apes bits, starting with the first look at the CGI animals in the film.Take a look…

There’s a link to the teaser site above – though there’s not much there. The film also has a facebook page, and they’re going to premiere more footage there on Wednesday, which we will surely be posting, and then they’ll be a trailer.

What this means is that they’re either attaching that trailer to Rio or Scream 4. If the former sounds ludicrous, the original series was mostly G rated. In fact, the second film in the series (Beneath the Planet of the Apes) featured a character being shot between the eyes, another couple gunned down, and the end of the world and it still got a G. But that was a different world.

This film seems modeled on the best Apes sequel – Conquest of the Planet of the Apes – and was originally to be written and directed by Scott Frank. He jumped ship, and it’s hard to say what to make of this new film without better defined behind-the-scenes talents. The last time Fox tried to reboot Apes, they made something monkeys like to hurl at the zoo.
