Last month we reported the Oscar-nominated True Grit star Hailee Steinfeld was set to play the title role in the upcoming live-action version of Sleeping Beauty. Well, now she can potentially add another legendary character to her burgeoning roster—the young actress is now in talks to play Juliet in an indie adaption of William Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet.
The Hollywood Reporter has it that “Carlo Carlie, an Italian director perhaps best known for the 1992 festival foreign film Flight of the Innocent, is behind the camera for the adaptation of the William Shakespeare classic,” and is gathering an increasing number of heavyweights to help him complete the film:
“Julian Fellowes, whose screenwriting credits range from Gosford Park to The Tourist, wrote the script and is producing along with Garbiele Muccino, the director of the Will Smith drama Seven Pounds, as well as former New Line execs-turned-producers Ileen Maisel and Mark Ordesky.”
The $15 million film is set to film in Italy in late spring. No word yet on who will play Romeo, or any other roles for that matter. However, with an actress and eerily talented as Steinfeld, here’s hoping they don’t opt for some awful Labeouf casting (seriously, Hollywood, enough of that guy!).
What do you think of Steinfeld as Juliet?
