Coming out of a third season with ratings stronger than ever (it’s MTV’s most popular show in the history of the network), the “Jersey Shore” cast members are no going to dominate the airwaves like never before. Jenni “J-Woww” Farley and Nicole “Snooki” Polizzi are getting a spin-off show, as will Paul “DJ Pauly D” Delvecchio for MTV. Both will get twelve episodes detailing their lives away from the core “Shore” group, with Delvecchio touring the country as a DJ, and the other featuring the two ladies living together.

This news comes after MTV announced there would be some delays with the fourth season, as the cast has had some location difficulties and contract disputes (generally code for “we want more money.”) Of course the cast deserve more money, but if it becomes too great a problem, MTV can easily salt the earth as these shows are made by editing. The cast may be more media savvy now, so perhaps they know what they can and cannot do near a camera, but editing is king.

The huge appetite for “Jersey Shore” has always come with some sense of ironic appreciation, and the cast – while chronically watchable – may yet implode and/or mellow with the benefits of wealth and fame. This is a small enough order of shows to not completely dilute the brand, but it also has the warning signs that come with solo projects. If these shows are just as successful as “Jersey Shore” then why would they come back? With editing that comes from reality television, MTV holds all the cards.
