In an effort to raise funds for the American Red Cross in light of the tragedies in Japan, Jimmy Fallon and Stephen Colbert devised a way to turn Stephen Colbert singing “Friday” – the Rebecca Black sung internet sensation – into event television. And so on “Late Night with Jimmy Fallon” both hosts joined in along with Fallon’s in-house band The Roots to go all out. The results follow. Check it out…
To be honest, I’m not an American Idol fan, so the appearance of Taylor Hicks means little to me (though his harmonica playing was great), but the enthusiasm by the performers throughout makes this spectacle greater than the source material. The best part for me is one of the members of The Roots does a parody of the driving sequence in the original video. But the wrap-up and all the people who pop out make this a great TV moment.
As always, this was done to help raise money for the American Red Cross and their efforts in Japan. I don’t know what the hosts plan to do next, but this may not be the end of their pranks/fundraising. It will be interesting to see if they think they can top this.
Party and party and party and?
