Though he was recently in discussions and considered the front runner, according to The Hollywood Reporter it’s now official: Will Sasso has now landed the part of Curly in The Farrelly Brothers Three Stooges film for Twentieth Century Fox. Now it’s rumored that Hank Azaria and James Marsden will fill out the lead roles, according to Deadline Hollywood. As shooting was rumored to start in March, perhaps once the two other roles get cast, it will go into production shortly thereafter.
As I wrote when Sasso was being rumored, it looks like Peter and Bobby Farrelly went with lesser-known actors. These are strong “that guy” performers who have been working successfully for years but have not had a role that’s defined them.
Granted, rumored Moe Hank Azaria has been a comic ringer for years in films like The Birdcage and Love and Other Drugs. But he’s probably best known for the number of voices he’s performed on “The Simpsons,” including the bartender Moe (which would make it funny that he’d play another Moe).
Possible Larry James Marsden may be the best known of the three, having played Cyclops in the X-Men franchise. But he spent that role behind glasses, and was overshadowed by Hugh Jackman’s Wolverine. Marsden has done comedy before, and was excellent in Sex Drive. He’s also in the upcoming Hop and we’ll be talking to him shortly, so if we hear anything specific we’ll pass it along. Also in Hop: Azaria providing a comic cartoon voice.
