It’s understandable that Tommy Lee – the drummer for Mötley Crüe and ex-husband of both Heather Locklear and Pamela Anderson – might get his own TV show. Poison’s Brett Michaels was able to turn his love life into a reality show, and many rock stars from his generation show up on reality television from “Dancing With the Stars” to “Celebrity Rehab.” Tommy Lee has moved in an entirely different direction, and is developing – according to The Hollywood Reporter - “Culture Shock With Tommy Lee” for the SyFy channel. Yes, the Syfy channel.
There are two things that rankle about this. The first is that the Syfy channel once seemed destined to – if not greatness – than at least a purity of vision. Everything’s been downhill since “Battlestar Galactica” turned the network into must-watch television, but it’s never been able to work out a full 24-7 program schedule that didn’t fall back on films like Eragon or Joyride 2: Dead Ahead. Hiring Tommy Lee seems like the stroke that forced AMC to change its name from American Movie Classics to now its less purposeful collection of letters.
The other thing is – though reality television like this is low-budgeted – who cares what Tommy Lee thinks about (say) the far East? Karl Pilkington has manged to make a go of it with his show “An Idiot Abroad,” but the joke was obvious from the title, and Pilkington had the behind the scenes talents of Ricky Gervais and Stephen Merchant encouraging/humiliating him.
Tommy Lee is most famous for being a rocker, and appearing in a sex tape with his now-ex-wife Pamela Anderson. Unless the man is far more or far less educated than he appears, what’s the point except a paid trip across the globe? The best hope is that he is accompanied by or is someone who knows their foreign cultures, or that Lee is a gigantic international boob.
Will a Tommy Lee travelogue be a train wreck and/or must see TV
