Taking a break from hamming it up as the eye-patched Nick Fury in just about every single film Marvel Comics has been involved for the past three years (five at last count, with at least two more to go), Sam Jackson has been cast in the neo noir thriller, The Samaritan, playing a character who—get this, you guys—has both of his eyes! Progress!
According to /Film, The Samaritan is “about a grifter who has spent the past two decades in prison and wants to escape his past. But new schemes entrap him, and things go wrong all over again.”
The film is set to be directed by David Weaver, who was inspired by such films as “Mona Lisa, The Crying Game, or later on, Sexy Beast and Memento… because they blended the conventions of the American genre film with a singular daring in their approach to their subject matter.” So, while Jackson’s films of late have yet to match his peak dramatic work of the 1990s, it sounds like The Samaritan might be a step back in the right direction.
Need more details? The film’s sales agent’s site describes it thusly:
“After twenty years in prison, Foley (Jackson) is finished with the grifter’s life. When he meets an elusive young woman named Iris (Negga), the possibility of a new start looks real. But his past is proving to be a stubborn companion: Ethan (Kirby), the son of his former partner, has an ingenious plan and he wants Foley in. The harder he tries to escape his past, the tighter he is ensnared in Ethan’s web of secrets, until it becomes all too clear to Foley that some wrongs can never be made right.”
