As much as it can be fun to hate on rom-coms/wedding movies (they’re just so cliched and by the numbers), there’s something about Bridesmaids that makes it feel a little bit more unique than all the rest. It feels as if it is stepping just enough outside of the box to be interesting to more than just 18-35 year-old spinsters needing to cry in a theater. The reviews coming out of SXSW all seem to agree (check out Movielines, JoBlo, IndieWire for reviews) and the latest trailer released only confirms that….
The film stars two powerful, female comedians, Kristen Wiig and Maya Rudolph, alongside Rose Byrne, Wendi McLendon-Covey, Ellie Kemper, Melissa McCarthy, Chris O’Dowd, Matt Lucas, Jill Clayburgh, Rebel Wilson, Michael Hitchcock.
There’s also strength in the powerhouses behind the camera with producers Judd Apatow, Clayton Townsend and Barry Mendel, and with writers Kristen Wiig and Annie Mumolo. Maybe it’s the fact that Paul Feig, the director of the film is also an experienced actor or that he’s directed some of the best dramatic and comedic television from “Weeds” and “Mad Men” to “The Office” and (one of my personal favorites) “Arrested Development“.

What do you think? Does it look like more than just a cliched chick flick to you?
