A new trailer has been released for the animated Columbia Pictures release, The Smurfs. The film is based on the popular cartoon series of the same name and will feature a mix of live action and animated elements. The trailer, much like the film isn’t what you’d expect. But don’t take our word for it, see for yourself. Check it out…

In The Smurfs, the forest creatures stumble upon a magic portal that transports them to modern day New York City (Central Park). They run into a married couple played by Neil Patrick Harris and “Glee’sJayma Mays and beg them for help to escape the evil Gargamel (Hank Azaria) who’s trying to capture them so they can be used in his magic.

For some odd reason, they start off this trailer with a serious sci-fi tone. There are scenes that look like they were taken out of the first Transformers movie. Remember when the autobots first landed? Imagine that, but with blue people and sparkles.

Other members of The Smurfs cast include Anton Yelchin, Katy Perry, Alan Cumming, and George Lopez (does he do voice work in everything now?).

The Smurfs is scheduled to hit theaters on August 3, 2011.
