Warner Bros continues to make move forward with their upcoming reboot Superman: Man of Steel. After casting the title role, they along with director Zack Snyder have turned to his “earth family.” The studio released an official announcement stating their next casting: Martha Kent. Clark’s maternal figure will be played by Academy Award nominated actress Diane Lane!

Who saw this coming? She’s certainly the best looking Ma Kent we’ve ever seen. The role was previously played by Eva Marie Saint in Superman Returns. Talk about a change of pace.

Snyder stated, “This was a very important piece of casting for me because Martha Kent is the woman whose values helped shape the man we know as Superman. We are thrilled to have Diane in the role because she can convey the wisdom and the wonder of a woman whose son has powers beyond her imagination.”

This announcement comes on the heels of rumors that Jonathan “Pa” Kent could be played by Oscar winner Kevin Costner. Nothing has been confirmed but we’ve heard that he’s been approached for a role.

It seems that Lane would be an off choice for this part, but at least she’s 18 years older than Henry Cavill, who plays Clark/Superman in the film. We’ve seen worse mother-son pairings. Also, they can work magic with make up and dowdy clothing. She’ll work.

What do you think of Lane being cast as Martha Kent? Who would you have picked?
