Early last year, 20th Century Fox released the first installment of what they hoped to be a huge franchise, Percy Jackson and the Olympians: The Lightning Thief. The film was adapted from the popular Percy Jackson book series written by Rick Riordan. According to The LA Times, a sequel might be on the way and we know which book will be adapted next…
As you might have guessed, the next film will be based on the second book in Riordan’s series entitled The Sea of Monsters. A source close to the sequel’s development says the studio has briefed a creative team on their plans for another installment. They’ve hired Scott Alexander and Larry Karaszewski to pen the script, which they’re currently writing.
On the other hand, director Chris Columbus (he directed The Lightning Thief) isn’t expected to return so we’re not sure who’ll helm the follow up. Columbus is likely to stay on board as a producer but nothing beyond that.
In The Sea of Monsters, “Riordan’s second book follows Percy and his group of friends as they head to the titular sea to find the mythical Golden Fleece and to free a friend who has been captured there.”
The Lightning Thief made under $90 million at the domestic box office, and the majority of its worldwide gross came from the $137 million it earned over seas. We’re not sure if audiences are into the live action version of the character as much as the studio thinks.
