A new trailer has been released for Tyler Perry’s latest movie Madea’s Big Happy Family. Like the majority of his films, it’s based on a stage play that he originally wrote, produced, and starred in. A few weeks ago Lionsgate premiered a teaser for the movie and it left a lot to be desired. Thankfully this version shows a lot more footage, more characters, and Isaiah Mustafa aka The Old Spice Guy! Check it out…
This new trailer features a lot more footage but you have no idea what the story is. That’s a double edged sword in the trailer world because usually they show too much. You don’t want to be spoiled but you want to know what you’re walking into. Much like the teaser, there’s no hook for the audience. They seem to be targeting Madea’s fanbase alone. She’s in it, so they assume that people will pay to see the movie by default.
We’ve actually seen the play version of the film and it does have a decent plot, but you can’t tell because there’s nothing but a bunch of yelling and slapstick antics shown in the trailer. It’s a pretty unfair representation of what Big Happy Family is really about.
See for yourself…
Madea, everyone’s favorite wise-cracking, take-no-prisoners grandma, jumps into action when her niece, Shirley, receives distressing news about her health. All Shirley wants is to gather her three adult children around her and share the news as a family. But Tammy, Kimberly and Byron are too distracted by their own problems: Tammy can’t manage her unruly children or her broken marriage; Kimberly is gripped with anger and takes it out on her husband; and Byron, after spending two years in jail, is under pressure to deal drugs again. It’s up to Madea, with the help of the equally rambunctious Aunt Bam, to gather the clan together and make things right the only way she knows how: with a lot of tough love, laughter…and the revelation of a long-buried family secret.
Madea’s Big Happy Family opens in theaters on April 22.
