Director Chris Weitz is back to redeem himself for New Moon with the dramatic, poignant film, A Better Life, the story “about a father’s love and the lengths a parent will go to give his child the opportunities he never had.” The film is set in the underbelly of L.A. and looks like it’s sure to be packed with plenty of generational and political issues. Though Weitz may have sold his soul to a mythological creature for a short while, he’s proved himself before with About a Boy that he can produce quality work and if this trailer is a sign of things to come, I’m in. Now that Weitz has all that the tween drama out of his way (and hopefully a pocket full of cash) is appears as if he’s now able to make a real film — possibly one that he can really be remembered for.
The film stars Demian Bichir who is a well-known Spanish actor who you may know as Nancy Botwin’s baby daddy on “Weeds” and new-comer Jose Julian as his son.
Just give the man his truck back!
Though I joke about New Moon, Weitz did a decent job with what he had to work with and lets face it, sometimes it takes doing something you don’t love to make something you do. If taking an easy payday leads him to be able to make more important film, great.
The film was written by Eric Eason who normally directs his own films, but this time has stepped back and allowed someone else to bring his words to the big screen. Let’s hope he made the right choice!
The film will be in select theaters June 24th, 2011
