The winner of the 2011 Academy Award for Best Original Song is Randy Newman for Toy Story 3. The composer spoke about being nominated 20 times and only winning twice including this year. He cracked a joked about not slowing down the telecast and thanked the Academy for being very kind to him as well as the music branch.
The nominees for Best Original Song were:
- “Coming Home,” Music and Lyrics by Tom Douglas, Troy Verges and Hillary Lindsey (Country Strong)
- “I See the Light,” Music by Alan Menken; Lyrics by Glenn Slater (Tangled)
- “If I Rise,” Music by A.R. Rahman; Lyrics by Dido and Rollo Armstrong (127 Hours)
- “We Belong Together,” Music and Lyrics by Randy Newman (Toy Story 3)
The fact that Randy Newman has been nominated 20 times and only won twice is a joke! Seriously, what’s going on with the Academy? We’re happy he took home an award last night. He was very light hearted about everything and had fun during his acceptance speech. Everytime that man performs, it takes us back to our childhood. He’s embedded in the lives of countless children thanks to his memorable tunes.
Congrats Randy Newman, you deserve it!
