It’s official. James “Man of the Hour” Franco has replaced Robert Downey Jr. as Oz, The Great and Powerful. The film is the latest feature from director Sam Raimi and Walt Disney Pictures. This marks the first tentpole Raimi has tackled since the demise of his Spider-Man 4 sequel with Sony. Deadline confirmed that Franco will play the title character in Oz, and he might be joined by Mila Kunis as the famous Wicked Witch of the West.
The story of Oz the Great and Powerful shows the wizard as a charlatan who’s part of a traveling circus but goes on a similar odyssey as Dorothy when he mysteriously lands in Oz. He’s a ring master who gets swept up in a tornado and lands in the mysterious world where he gets mistaken for a know-it-all. The prequel to the L. Frank Baum novel was scripted by Mitchell Kapner and David Lindsay-Abaire.
In a previous report, we learned that Kunis was in the running for the role of Theodorah, the younger sister of Evanorah who goes on to become the Wicked Witch of the West. Franco supposedly solidified his role in the film once he discovered that she was up for the part. Now that he’s been confirmed, perhaps Kunis’ casting is a sure thing?
