Just yesterday we learned that a remake of the 1991 comedy Soapdish was headed our way. It’s an interesting move by Paramount considering it’s a parody of the soap opera genre, which is currently dying. But when it comes to financial potential, Hollywood won’t let a little thing like logic stand in their way. In another strange move, Deadline is reporting that Warner Bros will remake their 1992 film The Bodyguard (cue the music: “And IIIIII–eeeeeeeiiiiiii will always love youuuuuuu!)
The original film starred Kevin Costner (as the title character) and Whitney Houston. The story centered on a music diva who’d become the target of a stalker. A tight laced Secret Service agent is hired to protect her and though they start off on the wrong foot, they eventually fall in love. The Bodyguard made $411 million worldwide at the box office, which for its time was one of the biggest grosses in history.
In the remake, the story will be slightly altered to fit with the times. Instead of a Secret Service agent, the bodyguard will be “a Iraq war veteran who gets the job protecting the star as his first gig after leaving the Army. He discovers that the world of Twitter, Google Maps and TMZ has made access to celebrities easier than ever, making the job more difficult than ever.”
No casting has been confirmed but they do plan on finding a real singer to play the Houston role. Jeremiah Friedman and Nick Palmer have been hired to adapt the screenplay.
There’s a level of disappointment that we just can’t explain here. Even though the original made a ton of money and had a great soundtrack — it wasn’t good. Houston’s an amazing singer and there aren’t a lot of artists of her caliber around today. If they change it to a pop star or overall entertainer anyone could fit the mold (Rihanna, Katy Perry), but if they need a diva with range we can only think of two: Beyonce and Jennifer Hudson, and quite frankly we’re sick of seeing Beyonce in every music-centric film.
This is a disaster.
What do you think of Warner Bros decision to remake The Bodyguard? Who should they cast?
