Who’s going to play the legendary Poncho Villa? Johnny Depp was attached to star in the feature The Seven Friends of Pancho Villa and the Woman With Six Fingers, but according to Blic Online, he’s dropped out of the film due to scheduling conflicts. With the role vacant, a couple other actors have surfaced as possible replacements: Oscar winner Benicio del Toro and Gael Garcia Bernal.
Villa will be directed by Emir Kusturica, who previously worked with Depp on the 1992 film Arizona Dream. Since the actor is busy prepping for several other films including Tim Burton’s Dark Shadows, he doesn’t have the time to participate in the Villa biopic. The site claims that del Toro and Bernal are both eying the project and the role.
Kusturica plans on meeting with the actors “in Cuba, after which he will come to a final decision as to who gets to be Villa in his new production.” On an interesting side note, both del Toro and Bernal have previously played the South American revolutionary Che Guevara, in Che:Part I and Part II, and The Motorcycle Diaries respectively. Therefore doesn’t it seem odd that their both going for the same character — again?
Who do you think should play Poncho Villa now that Depp’s out?
