You read our title right, Ice Cube is joining the cast of 21 Jump Street. The roster currently includes Jonah Hill and Channing Tatum and according to Deadline the rapper-turned-actor-turned-director is currently in negotiations to play a pivotal role that will have him in the middle of all the action.

Cube will play the precinct captain, a role that was originated by Steven Williams on the TV series of the same name. Phil Lord and Chris Miller are directing the film for Sony Pictures. Production is slated to begin in late April. There’s been no word on whether or not Johnny Depp (who appeared on the TV show) will make a cameo, but the Hill and Tatum are desperately trying to rope him in.

Tatum said, “We’re beating on his door so hard that I hope he answers. Yeah, we would freak out I think. We’re on top of it every single day. I think we send him something every single day.”

We like the fact that Cube is trying to diversify his acting resume. But we have to admit, Williams was a cool captain. He was 21 Jump Street’s version of Billy Dee Williams (the Colt 45 era). We’re not sure if Cube can pull that off.
