James Franco’s career has experienced a serious surge over the past year. He has an Oscar nomination under his belt, he’s hosting this year’s ceremony, and new film roles are consistently being offered to him. The latest is from Sam Raimi and Disney for their Wizard of Oz prequel Oz The Great and Powerful. Robert Downey Jr. was originally set to play the title character, but he dropped out. Johnny Depp was then offered the role, but he declined, and now the studio’s trying their luck with Franco.
According to THR, Franco’s deal hasn’t been finalized but talks are ongoing for him to star in the film. Oz the Great and Powerful shows the wizard as a charlatan who’s part of a traveling circus but goes on a similar odyssey as Dorothy when he mysteriously lands in Oz. He’s a ring master who gets swept up in a tornado and lands in the mysterious world where he gets mistaken for a know-it-all. This is the first directing project that Raimi has accepted since Sony scrapped the Spider-Man 4 sequel.
The casting for this film seems to be all over the place. From Downey to Depp didn’t seem like that much of a stretch because they look similar with their dark hair, eyes, and age but Franco’s significantly younger than the two. What are they going for exactly?
Do you think Franco would play a good Wizard of Oz?
