It’s back! The rumor that keeps on ticking has resurfaced and this time there might be some truth to it. According to Deadline, Inception star Joseph Gordon-Levitt is in talks to star in Christopher Nolan’s The Dark Knight Rises. Apparently, the director has been trying to keep his involvement under wraps but after over a year of speculation it looks like his cover is blown.
There hasn’t been an official announcement from Nolan or Warner Bros regarding the casting or what role Levitt will play. The actor is currently filming Rian Johnson’s latest film Looper, which co-stars Bruce Willis and Emily Blunt. Since there’s not a lot of info to go on, let’s play the speculation game.
When Levitt was first rumored to join the film, everyone suspected that he would replace Heath Ledger’s Joker. The character didn’t have a definite demise at the end of The Dark Knight leaving his storyline open. But Nolan nipped that idea in the bud a long time ago. Next, there was the possibility of The Riddler, but Nolan also went on to deny that character as well.
Another character who has been given the shaft from Nolan is Robin. The director and star Christian Bale, have always wanted to concentrate on Batman in his youth, and throwing Robin in the mix would add an extra element that would take away from Bruce Wayne’s evolving story.
We can understand that for Batman Begins and TDK, but since this is the last entry in the Nolanverse, would it be such a bad thing to add the sidekick? Not in the traditional terms as an annoying apprentice, but as an older, more mature version, like Nightwing? He could also be more of a cameo than a full supporting character. There are so many possibilities. What do you think?
Who do you think Levitt will play in The Dark Knight Rises?
