Today marks the end of an era. Regis Philbin, one half of the morning show duo from “Live! With Regis & Kelly” is retiring. The broadcast veteran announced the news on the program Tuesday morning to shocked audience members in studio and at home. The 79 year old has been on the show for its entire 28 year run, and now he’s ready to throw in the towel.
Philbin said, “It’s been a long time, it’s been 28 years since I’ve been here. And it was the biggest thrill of my life.” “Live” originally began in 1983 as “The Morning Show” a local production, which he co-hosted with Cyndy Garvey. In 1985 Garvey was replaced by Kathy Lee Gifford and in 1988, “The Morning Show” transformed into “Live! With Regis and Kathy Lee” and went national.
Gifford left the show in 2000, and for one season it featured a rotating door of guest hosts, one of which was soap actress Kelly Ripa. Ripa signed on as Gifford’s full time replacement in 2001, and the show was once again renamed “Regis & Kelly.” The show will probably change titles again, but this time Kelly will get the upper hand. “Live! With Kelly &…” To be determined. Who should replace Philbin? What about Ripa’s husband Mark Consuelos?
What do you think of Philbin retiring? Was it his time?
