This year several highly anticipated sequels are headed to theaters including Michael Bay’s Transformers Dark of the Moon (July 1), and Brad Bird’s Mission Impossible: Ghost Protocol (December 16). Not to be outdone, JJ Abrams will also make his presence known with the sci-fi project Super 8 (June 10) and we can’t forget the Peter Jackson – Steven Spielberg collaboration The Adventures of Tintin: The Secret of the Unicorn (December 28). According to the IMAX Corporation, we’ll be able to see all four films plastered on their high-def screens the day and date of their theatrical releases.
The decision to release the films in IMAX shouldn’t come as a shock to anyone. The previous Transformers films have experienced great success at the venues. Dark of the Moon along with The Adventures of Tintin were both shot in 3D so IMAX would be the perfect place to see the finished product.
We’re not sure what lengths Bird went to for Ghost Protocol but we do know that it’s filled with some breathtaking sequences including one where Tom Cruise dangles from the world’s tallest building (not a stunt double, Cruise himself!).
Since no one really knows how big or small Abrams Super 8 will be, it’s hard to know if IMAX is a good fit for the film. But if it’s anything like Mission Impossible:3 or Star Trek we can assume that there’s a method to this madness.
What do you think of these four films hitting IMAX? Should they be released at the venue?
