Last week we learned that Armie Hammer and Judi Dench were both confirmed to star in Clint Eastwood’s upcoming biopic J. Edgar. At the time Oscar winner Charlize Theron had been offered the role of Helen Gandy, a Justice Department file clerk who ends up being Hoover’s personal secretary. Unfortunately, according to reports Theron is out, but Ed Westwick from “Gossip Girl” is in (not for the same part of course).

Vulture reports that Theron has backed away from J. Edgar, but has inched closer to starring in Ridley Scott’s Alien prequel. She’s been mentioned as a contender to play the female lead in the film, which every woman in Hollywood has been trying to get their hands on. This shouldn’t be too much of a hard break for Eastwood, because Theron was never officially cast in his film.

Theron’s name has surfaced in Alien talks as a safe alternative to Noomi Rapace, whom Scott really wants to play the main character Elizabeth Shaw. Twentieth Century Fox has serious concerns about putting such a large project on the shoulders of an unknown. Therefore, they’re trying to rope in Theron as an alternative that they can both agree on.

As for J. Edgar, Eastwood is said to be looking at Amy Adams and Naomi Watts as possible replacements. Either one would do the role justice in our opinion. Another casting includes Ed Westwick, who has signed on to play a supporting but undisclosed role. He’ll be reunited with “Gossip Girl” guest star Hammer who’ll play Hoover’s close companion Clyde Tolson.

What do you think of Westwick joining J. Edgar? Who could he play? Who should star as the secretary?
