We (literally) just found out that Andy Serkis has signed on to reprise the role of Gollum in The Lord of the Rings prequel The Hobbit, and now we’ve learned that Ian McKellen will return too! We knew it was just a matter of time before he would officially come on board. This is turning into a real Lord of the Rings reunion!

The casting news comes from THR, who confirms McKellen and his doppelganger Gandalf will return for another stint in Middle Earth. This is McKellen’s first major film role since 2006′s X-Men: The Last Stand, and he definitely needs something to cover that atrocity and The Hobbit is just the thing! Both Gandalf and Gollum appear in the book from which the film is based, and Gandalf actually serves as a catalyst for the story.

Thus far, The Hobbit will feature Elijah Wood, Orlando Bloom, Cate Blanchett, Andy Serkis, and McKellen, now all we need is Christopher Lee to make this complete. We wonder how all the actors will feel reuniting 10 years after they first met on Lord of the Rings? We smell instant nostalgia.

What do you think of the growing cast of The Hobbit? Are you excited to see the movie?
