Over the past two years, Eminem has experienced an amazing resurgence with his music career. He’s once again the biggest selling artist around and he’s been nominated for multiple Grammys for his latest album. But despite his success in the medium he’s ready to return to acting. He made his breakthrough feature film debut in 2002 with 8 Mile. The drama was loosely based on his life and was a box office and critical success. It’s been nine years since he’s headlined a film, and it looks like he’s ready to get back into the game — the Hollywood game.
According to Vulture, Eminem is gearing up to star in the thriller Random Acts of Violence. Doesn’t that title sound fitting to you? The movie will be produced by 20th Century Fox and it will be directed by David Von Ancken. Originally, Violence started off as a poor man’s film version of the video game Grand Theft Auto, but Rockstar Games weren’t interested in damaging their franchise so they refused to sell the studio the rights. Therefore, Fox went and found a script similar to what GTA has to offer, and decided to make a movie off that but unfortunately the story came across as corny so they decided to scrap the idea.
Random Acts of Violence will now be a crime drama along the lines of The Town and The Departed. The premise of the revamped screenplay goes a little something like this:
An ex-con smarter than his past is fresh out of prison and trying to stay legit — but his efforts are complicated by his old gang, who want him back on the job. So, too, does the FBI, which hopes he’ll wear a wire and bring down the crime syndicate. The ex-con, meanwhile, tries to play both sides against each other long enough to exact revenge against those — on both sides of the law — who sent him to prison in the first place.
If Eminem does take on this role and the part in Kurt Sutter’s boxing flick Southpaw, he might have a full fledgling acting career on his hands. We’re not talking about dipping, and dabbling here and there, he has what it takes to be a legitimate star.
