In “we didn’t see that coming” news, Robert Pattinson has landed a lead role in David Cronenberg’s upcoming film Cosmopolis. According to Deadline, this will mark the British actor’s first post-Twilight gig following the completion of Breaking Dawn. The last time we heard anything about the film was back in May when Colin Farrell and Marion Cotillard were set to star. Here’s what’s happened since then…

Originally there was word that Farrell would play Eric Packer, a financial wunderkind who risks his entire fortune to bet against the yen on a tumultuous day. He’s an asset manager who loses all his wealth over the course of 24 hours and Cotillard was set to play his wife. Even though it seems that Farrell is no longer attached Cotillard is said to still be on board along with Paul Giamatti.

We would say that it would be weird to see Pattinson with Cotillard as a love interest but he’s worked with older women in the past (Reese Witherspoon in Water for Elephants). We think more than anything it will be strange seeing him as someone’s husband and an asset manager for a big business. He’s usually so emo and sad in everything else.

What do you think of Pattinson starring in Cosmopolis? Do you think he can pull it off?
