AMC must have a thing for period pieces because they’ve picked up a new television series called “Hell on Wheels” that centers on events that take place in Post-Civil War America. And you thought “Mad Men” was vintage! The network made an official announcement today regarding their decision to green light a full season of the series, which will join their growing roster of original programming.
“Hell on Wheels” centers on “former Confederate soldier Cullen Bohannan (Anson Mount),who sets out to exact revenge on the Union soldiers who have killed his wife. His journey takes him west to ‘Hell on Wheels,’ a dangerous, raucous, lawless melting pot of a town that travels with and services the construction of the first transcontinental railroad, an engineering feat unprecedented for its time.” The show also stars rapper turned actor Common who plays a freed slave who’s looking for work.
It’s written and created by Joe and Tony Gayton, whose most recent project was the vigilante action flick Faster that starring Dwayne Johnson.
The series examines the railroad’s institutionalized greed and corruption, the immigrant experience, and the plight of the newly emancipated African-Americans during reconstruction. Over time, “Hell on Wheels” chronicles this potent turning point in our nation’s history, and how uncivilized the business of civilization can be.
