Back in November we posted a paparazzi photo of John Cusack on the set of James McTeigue’s The Raven. Today we’ve got our first look at the actor in character via The Huffington Post. We’d like to say that we love the photo and everything it represents but unfortunately it feels kind of underwhelming, safe, and dare we say…predictable?

When you think of Edgar Allan Poe, a black suit, goatee, and a raven always comes to mind. This photo looks overly airbrushed and it seems as if they were going for an artistic feel (like a painting) but we’re not feeling it.

We learned back in August that Cusack would step into the shoes of Poe when he announced his casting via his Twitter page. He wrote, “ill play edgar allen poe in fall-a-film called the raven, send any poe- gold – my way as i begin this journey into the abyss.” It was a casual casting announcement that was quickly confirmed by the trades.

The Raven will also co-star Luke Evans and Alice Eve. Evans will play a detective who partners with Poe to search for a serial killer who has kidnapped the author’s fiance (Eve) and has gone on a murdering spree that mimics the author’s work.

What do you think of the first photo from The Raven?
