As the year comes to a close, the list of candidates for Oscar contention continues to shorten. Today the Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences have announced the semifinalists for this year’s visual effects category. As you might expect Tron Legacy made the cut as well as Alice in Wonderland and Inception. Check out all 15 of the films below…

The 15 Semifinalists in the Visual Effects Category are:

  • Alice in Wonderland
  • The Chronicles of Narnia: The Voyage of the Dawn Treader
  • Clash of the Titans
  • Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 1
  • Hereafter
  • Inception
  • Iron Man 2
  • The Last Airbender
  • Percy Jackson & the Olympians: The Lightning Thief
  • Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time
  • Scott Pilgrim vs the World
  • Shutter Island
  • The Sorcerer’s Apprentice
  • Tron: Legacy
  • Unstoppable

The list will be narrowed down to seven in early January by the Executive Branch of AMPAS’ Executive Committee with the final nominations announced on Tuesday, January 25, 2011, at 5:30 a.m. PT, live from the Academy’s Samuel Goldwyn Theater.

Our seven choices for this category would include Tron Legacy, Alice in Wonderland, Scott Pilgrim vs The World, Inception, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, The Sorcerer’s Apprentice, and Iron Man 2. We seriously have no idea how Hereafter made the list.

What do you think of the semifinalists so far?
