Earlier this year we saw the final season of the Showtime series “The Tudors.” The show was never as popular as “Dexter” or “Weeds” but it had a solid audience who loved period drama and excessive nudity. There, we said it. If you’re still yearning for risque entertainment with a side of history you should check out the network’s newest show, “The Borgias.” It’s headlined by Oscar winner Jeremy Irons and takes on the Vatican..dun, dun, dun, dun! Check out the trailer…

The tagline for “The Borgias” states that they are “the original crime family.” It’s a title that they live up to in spades. They lived during the Renaissance period and were led by Rodrigo Borgia, who’s played by Irons. Despite his questionable personal and professional practices the man and his family were able to dominate the political and religious arena because he was the pope!

This is definitely geared towards “The Tudors” crowd. The younger actor Francois Arnaud doesn’t have as much charisma as Henry Cavill did as the sidekick on “The Tudors,” but Irons definitely picks up the slack. No one can play evil like Irons. He can even make a cartoon character appear terrifying. Does Scar from The Lion King ring a bell to anyone?
