Merry Christmas Black Swan, you’ll be hitting theaters everywhere on December 22. The Darren Aronofsky feature opened in limited release on December 3 and Fox Searchlight has decided to step it up a notch. The film has received lots of critical praise and is being called one of the best films of the year. For those of you who don’t live in Los Angeles or New York, you can finally see what all the fuss is about.

Fox Searchlight expects to expand Black Swan into wide release with over 1,000 venues at the end of this month. When it initially opened last weekend it only played at 18 theaters throughout the country. The film “earned $1.4 million in 13th place, setting a new per-theater average for Fox Searchlight with $80k per venue.” With more theaters, comes more competition as the December 22 date pits the drama against some serious heavy hitters.

December 17 is the opening day for Tron Legacy, Yogi Bear, and The Fighter, while December 22 will have True Grit, Gulliver’s Travels, and Little Fockers vying for box office supremacy. Those are a lot of films that cover various audiences. Hopefully Black Swan will be able to find itself a spot amongst the holiday hoopla.

What do you think of Black Swan opening nationwide? Are you excited to see the film?
