Warner Bros has finally nailed down a director to take on the film Tales From the Gangster Squad and it’s none other than Ruben Fleischer! The Zombieland helmer originally became a candidate for the gig back in November along with Jose Padilha and Scott Cooper. Prior to taking on The Wolverine, Darren Aronofsky was being courted for the job as well as Ben Affleck, but Fleischer came out on top.
Tales From the Gangster Squad “is set in the 40s and 50s and is the fact-based tale by a squad of elite Los Angeles officers who fought organized crime kingpins like Mickey Cohen.” It’s said to be in the same vein as L.A. Confidential and The Untouchables. The project is “based on a series of articles by Paul Lieberman and was scripted by Will Beall, a former South Central Los Angeles cop who wrote the novel L.A. Rex.”
Fleischer is one of Hollywood’s rising directors thanks to the success of his feature debut Zombieland. He currently has the sequel on the horizon as well as Babes in the Woods, and the comedy 30 Minutes of Less. Someone has their hands full! We think this will be a great opportunity to see what Fleischer can do in the realm of drama.
What do you think of Fleischer directing Tales From the Gangster Squad?
