The queen of hip hop and R&B Mary J. Blige is ready to take her vocal talent to the big screen. The award winning singer is in negotiations to star in Adam Shankman’s big screen adaptation of the Broadway musical Rock of Ages according to Variety. Shankman will not only direct but he’ll also choreograph the entire film similar to what he did for his revamp of Hairspray.
The story for Rock of Ages takes place in the 1980s and the soundtrack is filled with tunes from Journey, Joan Jett, Bon Jovi and Pat Benatar. It centers on “a couple that meets at the Sunset Strip club Rock of Ages, falls in love and tries to stay together while living the rock life.” The creator of the musical Chris D’Arienzo has written the screenplay for the film. Rock of Ages premiered in Los Angeles in 2006 and went on to win five Tony Awards when it finally appeared on Broadway three years later.
For those of you wondering if Blige has what it takes to act in an ensemble don’t worry, she does. She’s appeared in several smaller movies including Prison Song, where she played the mentally unstable mother of A Tribe Called Quest’s front man Q-Tip. She also had a supporting role in Tyler Perry’s I Can Do Bad All By Myself.
On a side note, Tobey Maguire will serve as one of the film’s producers.
What do you think of Blige taking moving to the big screen in Rock of Ages? Who do you think she’ll play?
