The Academy of Motion Pictures Arts & Sciences have just accepted 15 films into their Animated Feature Film category and there are a LOT of surprises. We mean epic, “why the hell would they even consider this movie” surprises. On the flip side there are several films that deserve their spot on the list that will hopefully make it all the way to the end. Check out the candidates below…
- Alpha and Omega
- Cats & Dogs: The Revenge of Kitty Galore
- Despicable Me
- The Dreams of Jinsha
- How to Train Your Dragon
- Idiots and Angels
- The Illusionist
- Legend of the Guardians: The Owls of Ga’Hoole
- My Dog Tulip
- Shrek Forever After
- Summer Wars
- Tinker Bell and the Great Fairy Rescue
- Toy Story 3
Under the rules for this category, in any year in which 8 to 15 animated features are released in Los Angeles County, a maximum of 3 motion pictures may be nominated. If 16 or more animated features are submitted and accepted in the category, a maximum of 5 motion pictures may be nominated.
Our 3 picks would be Toy Story 3, How to Train Your Dragon, and Megamind or Despicable Me, but either way Toy Story 3 is going all the way. Not only will the film definitely get a nomination in this category but it will more than likely earn a nod for Best Picture as well.
As for the films that shouldn’t even be considered: how did Alpha & Omega and Kitty Galore get on this list? Was the only requirement animation because story wise both of those films are lacking. On another note, Legend of the Guardians didn’t have the greatest storytelling either but it was a beautiful film. The visuals were some of the best we’ve seen this year, so it does deserve some kudos for that.
What do you think about the films that the Academy has accepted?
