Stop the presses! There’s been movement on the big screen adaptation of 21 Jump Street. Months ago we learned that Jonah Hill would co-star and co-write the remake of the popular TV series that kick-started Johnny Depp’s career, and now according to Deadline another actor might get offered the lead in the film, Channing Tatum.
After holding multiple auditions and speaking to several actors, producers think that Tatum has the best on screen chemistry with Hill. We’re assuming that he’ll play a character like Depp’s Tom Hanson, while Hill could tackle a role similar to Doug Penhall who was played by Peter DeLuise.
According to Hill, his version of “21 Jump Street” will be more adult than what we saw on the small screen 2 decades ago. Back in January he told Coming Soon,
It’s a group of people that go back to high school to deal with a drug problem. To deal with crime in high school. I really love the “Back to the Future” moment of that where it’s getting to relive a certain period of your life… It’s a comedy with really cool action. We’re not doing something serious like ‘Miami Vice.’ But it’s not a parody. It’s a funny movie with a lot of great action and a real story.
Even though we’re not fans of Tatum’s acting we could see how aesthetically he’d fit in with the cast and the story. Who’s going to play the Holly Robinson-Peete character? She was our favorite next to Depp/Hanson. Production on the film is slated to begin in the spring.
What do you think of Tatum joining the cast? Is he the right choice?
