After months of excessive marketing, the folks over at TBS had to put up or shut up when their new late night talk show, “Conan” premiered. There was a lot of drama surrounding Conan O’Brien and his exit from NBC’s “The Tonight Show,” which earned him the sympathy of viewers who vowed to stay on Team Coco until the very end. Well, how many of you actually came through for Conan on his big night? Check out the ratings…
Monday night, “Conan” attracted 4.2 million viewers, which consisted of 3.3 million adults in the coveted 18-49 demographic. If that wasn’t good enough, he also beat out NBC’s “The Tonight Show with Jay Leno!” Isn’t that the sweetest revenge you’ve ever seen? Granted this is only his first episode, but the show is off to a very strong start.
In terms of his competition, Leno clocked in with 3.5 million viewers, with only 950,000 of his audience coming from the 18-49 crowd. “Late Show With David Letterman” was nipping at Leno’s heels with 3.4 million and 1.3 million, while both “The Daily Show with Jon Stewart” and “The Colbert Report,” earned 1.3 and 1.1. million viewers respectively.
Anytime a cable program beats all of its competition including shows from network television it’s a big deal. We wonder how long this winning streak will last?
What do you think of Conan’s numbers? Did you watch the show?
