We’re all for actors stepping outside the box and showing range but this new casting rumor might be pushing it. According to /Film, they’ve heard that former Disney star Zac Efron is up for the lead role in the live action version of the highly praised manga Akira. Yes, you read that right AKIRA!

The last time we heard anything about Akira, it had to do with Warner Bros hiring Albert and Allen Hughes to direct the film. The movie will be a live action adaptation of anime artist Katsuhiro Otomo’s 6-volume graphic novel that’s become a worldwide phenomenon among fans. For years there’s been talk of adapting the property but the majority of the plans have fallen through — until now.

The site’s source claims that Efron has been offered a role but it’s far from a done deal. Can you see him as the film’s lead? Like we said before, there’s nothing wrong with people stepping outside the box but Akira has a hardcore audience and we’re not sure that they’d stand for him being cast. This is a risky move for everyone involved. It would be great for Efron because it will give him a little street cred but that’s only if it doesn’t turn into a total disaster.

Do you think Efron should star in the film?
