Today is November 5th and thanks to the 2006 feature film V for Vendetta we can’t get the date out of our heads. The Wachowskis directed the live action adaptation of the graphic novel of the same name, which was written by Alan Moore. The film stars Hugo Weaving as a masked anti-hero who tries to bring down a ruthless totalitarian, while Natalie Portman plays a young woman changed forever because of his cause.
The most prominent quote that stands out from the film is, “Remember remember the fifth of November, the gunpowder treason and plot. I know of no reason why the gunpowder treason should ever be forgot.” That line refers to a man named Guy Fawkes who participated in the Gunpowder Plot back in 1605, which involved a failed assassination attempt on King James I.
V for Vendetta is set in London in a near-future dystopian society, and follows the mysterious V, a freedom fighter seeking to start a revolution while simultaneously pursuing his own violent personal vendetta. Besides the awesome costume Weaving wears in the film, the movie is mostly known for Portman’s bald head. This is the movie where she shaved it all off!
Even though November 5th is mentioned in the film and the trailer, the movie was released on March 17, 2006. It was kind of a let down in that respect but other than that we loved it.
Do you remember what happened on the 5th of November?
