And then there were four according to the latest casting announcement for Sony’s Spider-Man reboot. First we had Andrew Garfield as Peter Parker/Spider-Man, Rhys Ifans as Dr. Curt Connors/The Lizard, and Emma Stone as Gwen Stacy, now there’s word that dear old Uncle Ben has joined the crew in the form of Martin Sheen.

Over at Superherohype, they’ve confirmed that Sheen is in final negotiations to play the role of Parker’s paternal figure in the film. The character was previously played by Cliff Robertson in the 2002 adaptation. This announcement comes completely out of left field because the last we heard Sony was busy trying to cast J. Jonah Jameson and they went behind our backs and got Uncle Ben instead.

Martin Sheen, who the hell saw that coming? Not to discredit the actor because the man has talent, we just thought he was laying low for a while. This is a pretty high profile project and we weren’t even aware that he was interested in this part. What are they trying to do over there at Sony? Are they trying to make this movie, dare we say, respectable?

What do you think of Martin Sheen as Uncle Ben? Are you surprised he was cast?
