After years of waiting director Christopher Nolan has finally decided to reveal the title of his third Batman film. According to the LA Times Hero Complex, he’s gone from Batman Begins, to The Dark Knight to…drum roll please, The Dark Knight Rises. How do you feel about that? Not only did he announce the new title but he also cleared the air regarding the main villain. From the looks of it, The Riddler won’t be the bad guy and the film won’t be in 3D (yippee!).

After announcing The Dark Knight Rises as the sequel title, Nolan quickly shut down the idea that The Riddler would be the film’s villain. He flat out said, “It won’t be the Riddler.” Recently his Inception star Tom Hardy was confirmed to join the film in an unspecified role. Some speculate that he might play Killer Croc, because of the Louisiana based shoot they have scheduled but other than that lead we’ve got nothing. He could be anybody!

As for Hollywood’s obsession with 3D, it’s not touching Nolan’s Batman universe. The director confirmed that Warner Bros agreed that The Dark Knight Rises doesn’t need the extra dimension to fit in with the rest of the pack. Nolan wants to keep the trilogy cohesive with its looks and its casting. He said, “We’ll use many of the same characters as we have all along, and we’ll be introducing some new ones.”

Hardy is obviously a new one, and we’ve heard some rumors that he’s been looking for a new female lead since Rachel Dawes bit the dust in the second film. Will we finally get Catwoman? Harlequin? Hell, what about Zatanna?

Overall, the title for the film is OK, but it doesn’t strike fear into our hearts like The Dark Knight did. It seems simple and safe, we were kind of expecting more.

The Dark Knight Rises will hit theaters on July 20, 2012.

What do you think of the new title for Batman 3? Who do you think the villain will be?
