Piranha 3D didn’t break any box office records when it debuted in theaters back in August, but it still earned enough to warrant a sequel. Shortly after the film’s release Dimension Films sent out a press release stating their plans for a follow up. We knew another movie was coming our way but we had no idea how quickly it would arrive. According to Deadline, it will be in theaters by 2011. They’re not wasting any time.

Dimension has found writers for the Piranha 3D sequel, which they’ve named…Piranha 3DD. Just let the ridiculousness of that title soak in for a minute. Alright, let’s move on. They’ve hired screenwriters Patrick Melton and Marcus Dunstan, who also wrote Saw 3D, to pen the script, while Feast helmer John Gulager will direct. If that’s not a recipe for disaster we don’t know what is.

The fact that these three guys are on board along with the short time frame they’ve been given to develop, shoot, and market the film would be problematic for most movies but not Piranha. The film thrives on bad special effects, bad acting, and a ridiculous story. They’d only need more time if they were actually trying to make a good film, which they’re not.

Piranha 3DD will hit theaters in August 2011.

What do you think of the creative team for Piranha 3DD? What do you think of the title?
