Sad news to report, Barbara Billingsley of “Leave it to Beaver” fame has died. The actress portrayed the beloved June Clever on the classic television series, and made everyone wish their moms were as wholesome. She defined what it was to be the perfect mother. She was never too stern, always sweet, and always had warm apple pie ready when you needed it. She will be surely missed…
Billingsley played June from 1957 to 1963, the mother of Wally and “The Beave,” as well as everyone watching at home. The actress died on Saturday at her Santa Monica home at the age of 94. In a statement released to the press, her TV sons Jerry Mathers, who played Beaver said she, “helped me along this challenging journey through life by showing me the importance of manners, and respect for others.” While Tony Dow revealed, “We were wonderful friends.”
Billingsley knew that she was the cookie cutter prototype for what the perfect mother should be, and she happily turned that view on its ear when she appeared in the 1980 comedy Airplane. She played a passenger who helps a flight attendant by translating for two other customers who only speak jive. The scene is priceless and showed us that she wasn’t afraid to make fun of herself.
We’ll miss you! RIP Barbara Billingsley.
