We called this as soon as the information was released. On Tuesday, Sony announced that British actor Rhys Ifans had been cast as the villain in their reboot of Spider-Man. At the time, they refused to reveal the identity of the character he would play. We personally got the feeling that they would go in the direction of Dr. Curt Connors aka The Lizard and we were right!

According to a report from The Wrap, Ifans will indeed play the slithering bad guy opposite Andrew Garfield’s Spider-Man/Peter Parker. Sources close to the project reveal that The Lizard will be the main villain, and the rumors regarding the return of Venom are just that — rumors. As it stands, Ifans is The Lizard, Emma Stone in Gwen Stacy, and another actress who has yet to be cast will play the role of Mary Jane Watson.

We’re not surprised at all by this “revelation.” Just look at the man! He’s tall, lanky, and can play slimy better than most. He’s perfect for the part of The Lizard. Sorry Dylan Baker.

Spider-man will be directed by Marc Webb and is scheduled for release on July 3, 2012.

What do you think of Ifans as The Lizard?
