After his award winning performance in You Don’t Know Jack, Al Pacino has found a new shtick. It appears that the Academy Award winner has a thing for biopics. According to Deadline, he’s moving on from playing serial killers with medical licenses to gun toting record executives, a la Phil Spector.
It turns out that the Phil Spector story has been on the table for years as a possible feature film but it was never picked up. Director Cameron Crowe tried and tried again to get it made with Tom Cruise set to play the legendary producer but to no avail. It was looked at as a possibility for a moment but then dropped because the studio felt that “there wasn’t a third act.”
Spector has now fallen into the lap of acclaimed helmer David Mamet, who has somehow landed Al Pacino as the lead. If you’re not familiar with the Phil Spector’s controversial story, here it is in a nutshell. He’s one of the most successful music producers to ever live and he was known for making hit after hit. Unfortunately, his reputation took a dive when he was arrested and put on trial for the murder of actress Lana Clarkson in 2008.
Do you think Al Pacino can pull off Phil Spector?
