Now the dust has settled, we should all be used to the fact that Zack Snyder will direct the next Superman. There are a lot of high hopes for this project considering the Man of Steel’s track record hasn’t been the best as of late. The last time we saw the character on the big screen was in 2006′s Superman Returns which was directed by Bryan Singer and starred Brandon Routh. Routh has expressed openly that he’d love to reprise his role in the new film but Snyder doesn’t think that’s going to happen.
After it was revealed that Snyder would direct Superman, Variety asked him the big question, “Will Brandon Routh return to the role?” Snyder replied with it “isn’t likely.” We know there are a lot of people out there who had issues with the actor and his performance but we don’t think he was to blame. There were a lot of other reasons that Superman Returns was a mess and they had nothing to do with the man in tights.
Singer wanted to make a movie that was an unofficial continuation of Superman II, but unfortunately a lot of the story wasn’t congruent. It didn’t make sense. The movie was more of a drawn out romance drama than a superhero action flick. The casting of Kate Bosworth was all wrong (a 5 year old son, and a Pulitzer Prize?). She was too young, and unbelievable. Kevin Spacey as Lex Luthor was generic and safe. Singer could have really went outside the box to find someone new for the role like he did with Hugh Jackman for X-Men.
Either way, Snyder has a lot to make up for and it wasn’t Routh’s fault, but it looks like Matt Bomer and Jon Hamm should definitely submit their applications.
Are you disappointed that Routh won’t return? Who should replace him?
