Funny girl Emma Stone will put her flaming red locks to use when she stars opposite Andrew Garfield in Spider-Man. The star of Easy A was previously named as one of the contenders to play a pivotal female role in Sony’s reboot and according to a recent report from Deadline, she’s been officially offered the part of Mary Jane Watson.
Mary Jane was previously played by Kirsten Dunst in the Sam Raimi trilogy that ran from 2002 to 2007. Even though Dunst is a decent actress she never caught on with fans as the right person for the part. Stone beat out some tough competition for the role including Lily Collins, Ophelia Lovibond, and Imogen Poots.
Those actresses shouldn’t feel too bad because they’re still casting the role of Parker’s other love interest Gwen Stacy. Stacy was the perky blonde who Bryce Dallas Howard played in 2007′s Spider-Man 3. The actresses up for the role include Teresa Palmer, “Glee” star Dianna Agron, Georgina Haig, Alice in Wonderland’s Mia Wasikowska, and Dominique McElligott.
Now that Stone has been acknowledged as the studio’s MJ of choice, we hope they add some much needed spunk to the character. Granted Mary Jane’s no Felicia Hardy, but her damsel in distress act in the first trilogy wore out its welcome fast.
What do you think of Emma Stone as Mary Jane Watson? Who should play Gwen Stacy?
