In the words of Boyz II Men it’s so hard to say goodbye to last season. With the premiere of the Showtime series “Dexter” this week, the death of Julie Benz’s character Rita became crystal clear. But don’t feel too bad for her, the actress is still on television just not on cable. Benz stars as the matriarch of a super powered family on the new ABC series “No Ordinary Family.” She recently spoke about the show and the amount of love and affection she’s received from “Dexter” fans since her departure.
Something that always bothered me was the over the top love that came out of nowhere for the Rita character. Didn’t people hate her back in the day? Even Benz was shocked by the positive affection postmortem.
“You know, there was a lot of Rita hatred when I was on the show,” says Benz, “so it’s interesting to see this outpouring of love. My Twitter blew up [during the "Dexter" premiere], with people giving Rita the honor that she deserved. She was an amazing character to play. It was very touching to me to have that response, because sometimes you don’t know that people care that much.”
How do you go from a murdered wife to a superhero?
“When I found out I was going to be leaving “Dexter,” I wanted to find a strong female character, a really active woman,” says Benz. “Basically the exact opposite of Rita. And I’m so fortunate to find “No Ordinary Family. It really was the strongest female character to be found during pilot season.”
Well that makes sense. Plus, I’m used to seeing her kick ass thanks to her days as Darla on “Buffy the Vampire Slayer” and “Angel.” You can get your Benz fix with “No Ordinary Family” Tuesdays at 8 PM.
