An interesting name has popped up on the contenders list to direct the upcoming Superman reboot, Man of Steel. How would you feel if The Wrestler helmer Darren Aronofsky got behind the camera for the film? Whether you like it or not he’s a real possibility according to a report from Heat Vision.
Not only is Warner Bros interested in Aronofsky but they also have several other directors on their short list including Duncan Jones, Jonathan Liebesman, Matt Reeves, Tony Scott, Zack Snyder, and even Ben Affleck was mentioned at one point. We think he’s had enough exposure to Superman (Hollywoodland) and the superhero genre (Daredevil) to last him a lifetime. Aronofsky is said to be in active but early talks with the studio regarding the gig.
I’m personally a fan of Aronofsky’s films but he seems to do his best work in the indie field. Not with big budget projects that work under the studio system’s umbrella. I was interested in seeing what he would do with the defunct Robocop reboot as an introduction piece, but Superman is a different kind of animal. He’s probably the nation’s most popular and famous superhero.
As for his competition, Snyder has the visual talent to do it, but does he have the ability to tell a story that doesn’t isolate his audience? Tony Scott – NO! Just no! Matt Reeves is decent but I’m still a little unsure of him. This would be a great big budget project for Jones. It would be interesting to see what he would do with this kind of material, and the monetary means to create some great set pieces.
Who do you think should direct Superman from this group?
