Last week we learned that Dwayne Johnson was the new star of the Journey to the Center of the Earth sequel, Journey 2: The Mysterious Island. Now, according to THR, he’s going to get some much needed help from Oscar winner Michael Caine. The actor, who we last saw in this summer’s Inception, has signed on for a supporting role alongside Johnson, and returning star Josh Hutcherson.
Journey 2 is loosely based on the Jules Vernes book of the same name. In the film, Johnson will play the boyfriend of Hutcherson’s mom, who Hutcherson is forced to bring on a trip to a mythical and monstrous island to find his missing grandfather. The grandfather in question will be played by Caine, but this won’t be a small, cameo role. The trade claims that the veteran will be in “action mode” engaging in several chase sequences, including one involving giant bees.
Like it’s predecessor, Journey 2: The Mysterious Island will also be shot and distributed in 3D. The production will be set in Hawaii before moving on to North Carolina for the rest of the shoot.
What do you think of Michael Caine joining the cast of Journey 2? Who else could you have seen in the role?
