Who ever thought that James McAvoy and Tom Cruise would one day be competing for the same role? Well, it’s happened and its for the Universal film At the Mountains of Madness. Its the long developing project from Guillermo del Toro, which will also be produced by James Cameron. According to Collider, there’s a debate going on between the studio and del Toro regarding who should star as the lead. The filmmaker wants Tom Cruise but they’ve got their eye on James McAvoy. Who will they choose?

At Mountains of Madness is based on the HP Lovecraft novel of the same name that’s written from “the first-person perspective of a geologist named William Dyer, a professor from Miskatonic University. He writes to disclose hitherto unknown and closely kept secrets in the hope that he can deter a planned and much publicized scientific expedition to Antarctica. On a previous expedition there, a party of scholars from Miskatonic University, led by Dyer, discovered fantastic and horrific ruins and a dangerous secret beyond a range of mountains taller than the Himalayas.”

It’s safe to say that Dyer is the role that both Cruise and McAvoy are vying for. Del Toro plans on shooting the film next spring but who’s to say that either actor will be free to take part in its production? They both have busy schedules, McAvoy even more so. If we had to choose, McAvoy would be our pick. After appearing in 2008′s Wanted and next year’s X-Men: First Class his fanbase should grow significantly. Cruise on the other hand, isn’t exactly a safe bet at the box office, especially with domestic audiences.

Who would you like to see star in the movie? Are you Team Cruise or Team McAvoy?
